FILM MAKER | COMMUNITY ACTIVIST
JD Disalvatore currently serves as the Frontiers Awareness & Education Foundation’s very first Board Chair. She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge from her long-standing history and involvement as a civil rights leader and activist for the LGBTQ community and as a renowned and accomplished lesbian filmmaker. The Foundation is fortunate to count on her leadership, talent and passion for the advancement of the LGBTQ community, as well as her insight and tremendous contribution to both LGBTQ Cinema and culture.
Among her contributions to LGBT Cinema are the critically acclaimed Shelter; winner of the 2009 GLAAD Award for Outstanding Feature Film and named to AfterElton.com’s #1 slot of 50 Greatest Gay Films of All Time). Shelter went on to receive 27 additional “Best of” awards at various film festivals throughout the world.
Additionally, Disalvatore produced, A Marine Story (Winner of the Grand Jury Prize for Best Feature Film and the Audience Award for Best Dramatic Feature at Outfest 2010), Eating Out 2, Gay Propaganda, HBO’s Reunion, Neurotica and Elena Undone. A Marine Story also went on to win 17 “Best of” Awards for best feature film on the festival circuit.
Disalvatore maintains a strong commitment to community and consistently chairs fundraising events and initiatives for Lambda Legal, The Point Foundation and Outfest, where she also held the position of Festival Manager. She also served as Vice President of the Board of Directors with the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, and was recently honored by the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center with a LACE Award for her tireless work in organizing and fundraising for the LGBT community. Recently, she was named one of GO NYC Magazine’s 100 Lesbians We Love for 2009 and has been profiled in both Curve and The Advocate magazines.
Among her contributions to the field of Education, is the role of instructor in Production Management at The American Film Institute. Her numerous writing credits have focused on LGBT film and politics, and have been published in Curve, GayWired.com, Clout, PlanetOut.com and OurChart.com. She has spearheaded numerous educational panel discussions on queer cinema for Outfest, The Butch Conference, Power Up, The Writer’s Guild of America and the LAGLCC. Disalatore also conducts guest appearances on Sirius OutQ’s The Frank DeCaro Show on the topic of LGBT Cinema.
